Cobra Group joins humanitarian trip
Paige Adgemis from the Cobra Foundation accompanied a team that went on a four-week trip to Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. The team comprised of eight Ruyton students, two teachers and one World Challenge leader. They began with Zambia, visited the Victoria Falls and then went on with their acclimatisation trek to Botswana. They travelled along the ‘Okavango Delta’ on handmade wooden boats similar to canoes called ‘Mokoros’ and also travelled through the desert in Namibia. Finally they arrived at the Waterberg Primary School, which relies on donations and volunteers to continue educating Namibian Children.
The team had work to do at the Watergerg Primary School. They began with doing some purchasing. Says Paige Adgemis, “On our first day we were faced with the challenge of purchasing all the required equipment with the money fundraised throughout the year. We had to travel for over an hour to get to Otjiwarango, where we spent a tiring and stressful day finding materials and bargaining for the best prices”. The next was getting on to doing things at the school. They dug trenches, mixed cement, laid bricks and did some other things too. With the money that was left they bought for the school children things like netballs, soccer balls, pencils etc. There was also an interactive chat with the students, with emphasis on hearing out their issues.
